Grab Bars

Grab bars installed properly are among the most cost-effective fall prevention modifications in a home — and installed improperly, they create a false sense of security. The key variables are weight rating (typically 250–500 lbs), length, mounting angle, wall material (drywall requires locating studs or using toggle anchors rated for the load), and finish. Suction-cup grab bars are widely sold but occupational therapists and fall prevention organizations generally do not recommend them for primary use — they can release under load. Our first installation used the wrong stud location and the bar had visible flex under my mother's weight.
