Hearing loss is extremely common in older adults — the NIH estimates about one-third of adults between 65 and 74 have hearing loss, rising to half of those over 75. The 2022 FDA ruling established an over-the-counter hearing aid category, making prescription hearing aids no longer the only access point. OTC hearing aids are appropriate for mild to moderate hearing loss; they are not a substitute for an audiological assessment when significant hearing loss is suspected. Personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are a separate category and are not intended for hearing loss treatment.
