How We Research Caregiving Products

What we look at

For each mobility aid, bathroom safety product, or adaptive device: weight capacity and dimensional specifications (seat height, turning radius, doorway clearance where applicable), adjustability range and ease of adjustment, weight of the product itself (critical for transport and caregiver handling), fold mechanism and storage footprint, non-slip features and stability, and warranty terms.

For safety products specifically: we look at load ratings and testing standards, installation requirements, and the specific conditions under which a product is — and is not — appropriate.

Our sources

We draw on verified owner reviews from Amazon and independent medical supply retailers, manufacturer specifications and product documentation, occupational therapy community guidance (AOTA resources, OT Practice, caregiver-focused OT forums), AARP HomeFit Guide recommendations, CDC fall prevention research and statistics, and caregiver community consensus from r/AgingInPlace and the Caregiver Action Network. Sourcing is attributed where it materially affects a recommendation.

What we don't do

We do not conduct personal clinical testing or medical assessments. We do not claim hands-on testing of every product we cover. We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage. We do not reduce complex, individual-specific decisions to simple star ratings — product suitability in this category depends heavily on the specific user's measurements, conditions, and home environment.

YMYL framing and qualified language

This site covers products that affect the safety and daily functioning of older adults. We take that seriously. Where content touches on safety, fall prevention, or products used in medical contexts, we use qualified language — "commonly used for," "many occupational therapists recommend," "research suggests," "widely cited as effective." We do not make definitive safety claims. We consistently recommend professional consultation for significant purchasing decisions.

Keeping content current

The adaptive equipment and medical supply market changes with new model releases, updated specifications, and brand changes. We update guides when new models launch or when specifications change materially. If you find outdated information, please use the contact page to let us know.
